What a Website!
I am amazed at the utility of some of these websites as reservoirs of really helpful resources. One such impressive website is "Readwritethink" It is a collaborative effort between the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Council of Teachers of English(NCTE). What I particularly like about this site is the many lessons tailored made for different levels done in a similar format to what we have to do for the Lesson Portfolio. There is a database of actual lessons that state the standards use, number of sessions and instructions. Ready made resources may even accompany the lessons. Therefore, this facility can aid us in the Electronic Portfolio assignment.

Thanks Colin,
ReplyDeleteIt is only when I saw the examples I clearly understood what was required of us in that assignment. It caused me to reflect on my own learning style and those of the students we teach.
I am not all of one or the other, indeed I require concrete visuals especially in those subjects where I am a bit challenged, at other times, I am satisfied with the abstract. If this the case for me,then it must be the same for students as well.
How many times have we been frustrated by our students not "getting it" after spending an entire period explaining a concept? When all that was required was an the stimulus of concrete materials to get those creative juices flowing.
Thanks again Colin.
Thanks a lot Colin. I will definitely be checking that website as I am still clueless about what I need to do with respect to those lesson plans as they are really not what we have been accustomed doing. Greatly appreciated!
ReplyDeleteI am glad that my post about Readwritethink website was helpful to you, Starchild and Maxine. Perhaps, this part of the course work might be the most challenging of the three. In addition to help from the website, I thought it wise to do a lesson and check it with my lecturer. That turned out to be very beneficial because she opened up my eyes to a number of things that I missed and was not clear about.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing I like about Readwritethink is that you can produce lessons and get paid doing it. Our lecturer informed us about that the last day of class. So, you can publish and become known and earn some money at the same time.
Hi Colin,
ReplyDeleteToday was the first time I accessed your blog. You are a prolific blogger and your posts are all very informative. (I ended up reading all of them). Thank you so much for sharing your fount of knowledge. It is only during this course I learnt about copying print screens and I definitely plan to join delicious to bookmark my sites. The list of favorites on my computer is huge but it is unsorted and not available to me on any other computer.
One of the new things I learnt from your blogs is a way of recovering lost data using 'Recuva'. I checked it out and I will be downloading the software soon.
Thanks again Colin. You are a true reading, and dare I say, technology, specialist.
I am delighted that you find my blog very informative and that you have read all of them. Yes, "Recuva" is a very powerful recovery program indeed. I had lost many video and still picture files of my one and only trip to the United States and I was able to recover all of them with Recuva. Thanks for the compliments.
ReplyDeleteHi, Colin,
ReplyDeleteI must first commend your wonderful blogging style. I simply came to read a blog or two and spent quite a long time perusing all your blogs, then finding sites (for proof).
Your blogs are indeed insightful and the brevity of each post makes reading easy!
Keep writing!
Thank you, Ms. Raphael, for your wonderful compliment. I am pleased that you find my posts insightful.
ReplyDeleteThe internet user has the benefit of a wide variety of sites and information which will certainly complement and assist any endeavour that he or she may embark on. However, certain key considerations need to be exercised. First of all, one needs to be careful about the negative influences and even "traps' which may be awaiting the vulnerable user. Additionally, one also needs to be careful about becoming too dependent on internet resources. The selective user should know how to discriminate between sites that may pose a threat and information which may facilitate plagiarism. Yet, I am in agreement with using the "Readwritethink" website. Only be careful!
ReplyDeleteYou raised some valid concerns about the internet and you mentioned some positive aspects of it. My perspective is that everything in life has risks. Some ventures may be more risky than others. The point is that one has to be judicious and careful in everything. For instance, all information can be abused. So it is not the information itself but how you use it. As you said, the internet is a great resource and as with everything else there is good and bad. You have to use everything wisely.
