The Social Networking Approach

The article entitled “Techtalk: Web 2.0, Blogs, and Developmental Education” written by David et al has helped me understand what exactly is web 2.0 technology (loosely called Social Networking) and how its various forms are connected as shown below:

The essence of web2.0 technology is that it is designed for sharing multimedia, creating things together and discussion of ideas with easy-to-use tools. This design is greatly contrasted with the earlier 1.0 technology which requires a higher level of programming and does not create a space for this kind of interactive sharing and creating.

I believe that the right strategy is the key element in attacking any challenge. Struggling readers use various manifestations of web 2.0 technologies so it is a great approach to employ various forms of this technology in treating with reading issues. I want to revisit many of the traditional reading strategies in order to explore novel ways of adapting them to this new technology, thus enhancing their potency. I believe that packaging it in web 2.0 technology will create an even greater appeal to millennium children.

  1. Hi Colin,
Sorry for taking this long to comment. I want to agree with you in terms of what the web 2.0 technologies represent, however, like Khadine and others, I am a bit apprehensive as regard the ease with which these technologies can be utilized given the present technological standard of our schools. Being the techno savvy person you are, I can well imagine your excitement and anxiety to get back to school (you might be one of the very few who wish they were still in school) to try these technologies out.
I have to agree with you also in terms of the solution to any instructional challenge is to find the right strategy, and I too propose to try out the web 2.0 technologies (if not all, whatever I can use) with my students next term. So I am truly interested in exploring novel ways of adapting the traditional reading strategies to satisfy the interests of our Web 2.0 students. When you do your exploration please share your findings with me and vice versa.
I must complement you on your level of technological knowledge and the professional manner in which you share your knowledge. I did try accessing UWI database, following your instructions, but I get stuck under “Search Modes”. I do not know if I am typing in the correct title for the search, but that’s how far I have gotten (and you know, once I encounter a problem I give up on the technology). Help me if you have the time.

  2. One easy way to get access to Ebscohost is to log in to delicious, look at my bookmarks for Ebscohost website. Clicking it will send you straight to Ebscohost website. However, we have to be networked first. My user name is hombresincero. You can add me to your network and you can see all the interesting sites that I have been reading. Also you can tell me what is yours.

However, considering what you said you got stuck when you are in search mode. I now realize that you do not really have a problem. The good news is that you have already accessed the site. For a moment I taught that you had problems accessing the site. So I think the difficulty is just as you said "search modes" I assume that you are using "Boolean/ Phrase". This is something like an exact phrase. So I suggest broadening your search net by using "Find any of my search terms” instead. I think this should do the job. And congrats. You were able to access the site
