Reading Strategies - Not 1 but 50

In one of our reading courses the book "50 Content Area Strategies for Adolescent Literacy" was recommended to us. I bought the book and discovered how quick and easy it is to access tested research based strategies that are actually used in the classroom. I am exploring the notion that proven strategies can be enhanced when used with Web 2.0 technology. Each strategy provides the following information:
  • Supporting research for the strategy
  • Step-by-step strategy implementation
  • Classroom example of strategy in action
  • Strategy literacy focus before, during and after lesson
  • Literacy component that the strategy develops, for example, fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, writing or oral language.
Therefore, if you got stuck on doing your Web 2.0 paper, or lessons and you need some stimulation or ideas, this simple yet powerful book might do the trick.

  1. Hi Colin,
I enjoy using the book "50 Content Area Strategies for Adolescent Literacy." I also agree with your views on the close association between this book and Web 2.0 technology. They go hand -in- hand.It is quite a resourceful book and the strategies listed do in fact blend very well with the New Literacies.

  2. Hi Colin,
Thank you. I did not connect the book "50 Content Area Strategies for Adolescrnt Literacy" with Web 2.0 until I read your blog. It is a gem that every teacher should possess. I will certainly recommend it to be used hand in hand with Web 2.0 technology. I will now be looking at our other recommended texts.

  3. I was quite fascinated by that book, since it was to me a portal into a higher dimension of teaching. The task was now mine to work the Web 2.0 technologies into these different strategies. This book coupled with the knowledge I received in this course will definitely serve me in good stead, throughout my career as a Reading Specialist. I anticipate wonderful learning experiences on the part of my students.

  4. Yes that book was certainly an 'eye opener' when it came to learning new instructional strategies. I loved the fact that it is like practical guide to using and applying the strategies we would like to use with our students.I hardly ever plan a lesson without consulting it.
I try to share one new strategy as often as possible with other Heads of Department and members of my Spanish and English Department.
