Making Learning Fun

This ICT course designed to sensitize budding Reading Specialists to the many forms of Web 2.0 technology and how it can specifically be used for literacy development has been most exciting and informative. I have become aware of the many forms of the manifestations of this technology and how they connect. Additionally, I have learned how to apply the technology to improve literacy. Knowledge is one thing but application is quite another! Application is the challenging part. Our lecturer and her team, in addition to making the course stimulating and enlightening, must be commended for the many useful resources that they provided such as free image databases, Youtube videos and WikiEducator workshop. These resources and the labs have made the technology easier to grasp and apply. The powerful Web 2.0 technology and the resources that I have received from this course will greatly assist me in using Social Networking as a tool and strategy for enhancing literacy.

  1. I can safely say that networking using Web 2.0 technology in the classroom would certainly enhance learning. I can personally endorse Web 2.0 as a motivational tool. I am so excited although I am still having problem nativating and using the different tools.

  2. Practice makes perfect. I encourage you to keep at it. It is worth the effort. I agree with you that these tools are powerful for enhancing learning and increasing motivation. The more we consider their application to literacy, the better we get at applying them to the curriculum. That is why I think the article "Instructional Planning Activity Types as Vehicles for Curriculum-Based TPACK Development" is so instructive. I was so impressed with it, that I plan to blog about it.

  3. I too must applaud the facilitators for their efforts and insight for the content of this course. The "free" software will be an added resource to stimulate learning in the classroom. I can now apply the tools to improve the delivery of the necessary content, however, to have students do so will be the next hurdle in the current system. I am very excited about integrating the learned, no internet required technology in my classroom.

  4. Hi Collin! I must say that I agree with you regarding the success of this course in terms of teaching us as future reading specialists how to use the various forms of web 2.0 technologies to promote literacy. In the past, my notion of integrating technology in my lessons would usually involve showing a very short video clip for my set induction or using a power point presentation to deliver the content of the lesson. Limiting right?

What stood out for me was our lecturer’s point that although we may face challenges in terms of lack of resources in our classrooms the key is to teach the children to interact with the technology. I am now able to see how I can use blogs for example, to assess students’ learning and promote interactive learning even though the students do not have access to internet within the classroom. It is available at the library or at home.

In addition, I found it amazing when we used everyday pictures to teach something worthwhile and... every student did not need to have a digital camera too. This digital photo story telling was a blast for me. I can’t wait to have my students explore their immediate environment in a fun manner while learning as required by the curriculum. I can now really appreciate the use of web 2.0 tools to enhance learning environments and stimulate students’ interests in learning, through my own experiences. I truly believe that this captures the true essence of learning. Wouldn’t you say?

    Regards,

  5. HI Colin,
I feel almost the same way. I say almost because though the resources and activities provided by the lecturer and her team helped me to learn a lot about ICTs I feel that I have to do more practice on my own before I am competent in its use.
